Bakunye nathi

Bakunye nathi

isiZulu & isiXhosa for “they are one with us.”

Remember, honour, and keep them with us.

A private place for your family to record where your loved ones and ancestors are buried — and to keep their photos, stories, and memories safe, together.

A quiet, private place for family memory

Bakunye nathi helps South African families record, honour, and find the burial sites of the people who came before them — so those who have gone stay part of the family. Each site is treated as a small, sacred piece of family heritage — never a public record. Your family is the boundary: by default, nothing is seen outside it.

What Bakunye nathi stands for

Private, and yours

Every memorial is family-only from the moment you create it. Nothing is public, and nothing is shared without your say-so. Your family owns its records — and can export or delete them at any time. Built to POPIA, South Africa’s privacy law, and enforced right down to the database.

On your terms

No rituals are assumed or prescribed. You record your family’s practices in your own words, in your own language — English, isiXhosa, isiZulu, Afrikaans, or Sesotho — with plain, respectful wording made for elders as much as for grandchildren.

Easy to find, easy to keep

Pin a grave from the graveside, find your way back with a tap, and gather photos, written memories, and voice notes in one place. Mark ceremonies and remember anniversaries — so the knowledge of who lies where is never lost.

How it works

Sign in with your phone

No passwords and no email needed — just your mobile number and a one-time code by SMS.

Create your family

Start your private family circle, and invite the people you trust by link, QR code, or SMS.

Add your first memorial

Pin the resting place, add a photo and a memory — often in under five minutes.

For families

A gentle, private app for your phone. Keep the places, faces, and stories of your people together — and pass that knowledge on to the next generation, in your own language.

For funeral homes, heritage bodies & councils

Bakunye nathi is available as a white-label service. Capture a family’s record with dignity at their time of need — a memorial, a location, even a graveside GPS pin — and hold it safely “in trust.” When the family is ready, they claim it with their phone and full ownership passes to them, to keep forever.

Privacy by design

Family-only by default. Photo location data is stripped on upload. Sessions sign out on their own when left idle. Burial sites are never shown publicly. It is their heritage — held with care.

POPIA is South Africa’s Protection of Personal Information Act — the law that says your personal information must be collected fairly, kept safe, and used only for what you agreed to. Bakunye nathi is built to it: your family’s records are private by default, and the family, not us, owns them.

Offer Bakunye nathi under your own brand

Bakunye nathi is available as a white-label service for funeral homes, heritage bodies and councils. Capture a family’s record with dignity at their time of need — held in trust under your own branding, on South African infrastructure built to POPIA — and hand full ownership to the family when they are ready. Families are welcome to write to us too.
